Solo Presentation

With Roman Cotoșman
Ivan Gallery is pleased to invite you on Thursday, October 9, between 7:00 and 9:00 PM, to the opening of the solo exhibition Roman Cotoșman (b. 1935, Jimbolia - d. 2006, Philadelphia), organized by Ivan Gallery in collaboration with Paul Neagu Estate UK and Paul Neagu Estate RO. The exhibition features works by the artist from the 1980s–1990s. Roman Cotoșman is a key figure of experimental, minimalist, and conceptual art, and a defining presence within the neo-avant-garde. A founding member of the group 1.1.1., Roman Cotoșman was a promoter of interdisciplinary visual thinking, situated at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Some of the works on display have previously been presented by Galeria 3/4. Roman Cotoșman is a central figure in experimental, minimalist, and conceptual art and a defining presence in the neo-avant-garde. A founding member of the 1.1.1. group, Roman Cotoșman promoted interdisciplinary visual thinking, placing himself at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Some of the works on display were previously presented in 1996 at the 3/4 Gallery in Bucharest. By investigating geometric language, visual perception, and modular structures, Roman Cotoșman developed a systematic and analytical approach. His interdisciplinary practice combines the exact sciences with the visual arts and is expressed in works related to the kinetic, op-art, constructivist, and minimalist traditions. He also showed an early interest in conceptualism, where idea, process, and structure become essential components of artistic expression.

Tell us about Ivan.

Ivan Gallery is a contemporary art gallery opened in 2007 in Bucharest as a private initiative of Marian Ivan. The gallery’s programme focuses on local artists, be it established ones, such as Geta Brătescu, Paul Neagu, Ion Grigorescu, Lia Perjovschi, as well as from the younger generation, such as the duo Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Cristina David, Ștefan Sava and Iulia Toma. The gallery also collaborates with Romanian artists living and working abroad, such as Bartha Sandor and Mădălina Zaharia, as well as foreign artists like Elijah Burgher, Ross Taylor and Jaro Varga. The gallery aims at supporting the career of artists with an articulate, conceptual artistic discourse, while at the same time researching and exhibiting internationally the experimental practice of insufficiently known Romanian artists from the second part of the 20th century, such as Simona Runcan and Florina Coulin. In 2021 Ivan Gallery opened a new exhibition space inside Atelierele Malmaison.
