Code shifts in a neural network

With Daria Langa & Norbert Filep
Curated by Ana Caterina Correa de Lima & Yvette-Vivien Precuț
Code Shifts in a Neural Network What wecall concrete data is only momentarily fixed, its clarity is most often fleeting. An idea takes shape gradually, through layers of revision and the formation of associative pathways. And once it is passed on, it doesn’t remain intact, it is reshaped again, undergoing the same process in a new mind. Through his artistic practice, Norbert Filep translates abstract, scientifically generated information into a more loosely coded system of visual structures. He experiments with different working media, but primarily uses drawing, with controlled lines and geometric forms, as he uncovers a new abstraction in a digitized society. Daria Langa’s work explores a wide range of subjects through diverse media, from painting to digital art and installations. Nevertheless, memory is a recurrent source of her art, which often offers metaphorical interpretations of information drawn from visual reality. Despite having different approach to their respective working mediums, Norbert’sclear stratification of information into a visualform interacts and starts a dialogue with Daria’s more chaotic and exploratory language, on a shared ground with the attempt to translate a reality that resistsit. Workingwith a predominant lymonochrome landscape with few colour interventions, the layering of lines results in the emergence of new forms, shapes, and eventually paths that are similar to the way weprocess reality from a neurological standpoint. Perception is increasingly understood as the brain’s attempt to infer the cause of sensory input susing internal prediction-models rather than simply recording external reality. Following this, it becomes clear that memory is non-linear, being constantly sensorystimulated, so that the same stimulus begins to generate different responses which change over time. Information is redefined and reconstructed every time we attempt to recall a lived or reactivated memory, in the same way images are formed by the overlap of lines in a barren landscape. In this process a shift occurs in the context of the exhibition, a reconfiguration of the coding where the flow of information is reversed. Currently, Atelier Patru is hosting an exhibition that is part of the "Praxis" project of the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, a project that offers a platform for expression and professional affirmation to young curators. This year's edition of Praxis includes a number of 16 exhibitions, hosted by various art spaces in Cluj.
