Cap. I: Iarna

With Florin Mitroi
Curated by Erwin Kessler
Arsmonitor Gallery is pleased to announce the beginning of a collaboration with Erwin Kessler, one of the most influential curators and art historians, launching a series of exhibitions dedicated to Florin Mitroi, "the most discreet and decent Romanian artist, who left behind the most indiscreet and violent body of work." The exhibition Florin Mitroi: Chapter I: Winter offers a new perspective on Mitroi's complexity, with some of the works being shown for the first time in Romania, alongside an extensive selection of his photographic work. The presentation of the photographs as slides is overseen by Nicu Ilfoveanu and Radu Mitroi. "Twenty-two years after his premature disappearance, Florin Mitroi remains a constant revelation. Solitary and enigmatic, a Stakhanovite of deferred suicide, Florin Mitroi is the author of a colossal body of work in terms of size and unfathomable in depth. In his thousands of works, two contrasting vectors converge: the unbearable pain of existence, intertwined with a formal perfectionism unparalleled in postwar Romanian art. His art electrifies the soul and delights the eye. Even after his solo exhibitions at Schipper and Johnen galleries in Berlin, and group shows at Kunsthalle Wien or Lenbachhaus Munich, Florin Mitroi's work remains a construction site in the abyss. The series of exhibitions Florin Mitroi at Arsmonitor, starting with Ch. I: Winter, maps the edge of this abyss. Works on wood, glass, and canvas, in galvanized metal or on paper, outline the contours of doubt bearing the name Florin Mitroi, presented - for the first time in an exhibition - with examples from his rich and relevant photographic production”. Erwin Kessler The exhibition will be open to visitors starting November 19, 2024, from Tuesday to Friday, between 12:00 and 17:00. For visits outside of these hours, please contact the gallery.
